In 1534, Jacques Cartier was commissioned by King Francois I to sail from Saint-Malo heading west to discover a passage way to Asia. During that expedition he explored the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence and encountered Natives. In June of 1534 he planted a cross on the Gaspe peninsula and claimed it for France.
