Tecumseh Attests His Loyalty to the British Flag 1812

McCausland, Toronto

circa 1928

Tecumseh, a Shawnee Indian, is known for his life's work to resist the transfer of land, a concept which he claimed to be incompatible with the Indian tradition of shared hunting rights. 'Sell a country!' Tecumseh exclaimed in his speeches. 'Why not sell the air, the clouds, and the great sea? Did not the Great Spirit make them all for the use of his children?'

When war broke out in 1812 between Britain and the United States, Tecumseh fought with the British.
