Angel, Mary's Companions and Tomb (detail)

A.L. Moore, London

circa 1920

An Angel with red feathered wings and rich robes sits atop Jesus' empty tomb. The Three Marys are commonly understood to be Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, and Mary Cleophas, the companions of the Virgin Mary. All three were present at Christ's Crucifixion.
