Trial of Thomas Scott by Louis Riel 1870

McCausland, Toronto

1926

In 1870, Louis Riel led the formation of an illegal Provisional Government in Fort Garry (now Winnipeg), to resist Ottawa's plan to displace the French-speaking Catholic Metis with an influx of English Protestant settlers. Thomas Scott was a virulently racist Orangeman who inflamed the Provisional Government and was executed for insubordination.

Himself executed in 1885, Riel is now considered one of Canada's most authentic cultural heroes.
