Expulsion of the Acadians

Terry Smith-Lamothe, Halifax

1986

The Expulsion of the Acadians (also known as the Great Upheaval, The Deportation, the Acadian Expulsion, Le Grand Derangement) was the forced removal by the British of the Acadian people from the present-day Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island (an area also known as Acadie).

The British Conquest of Acadia occurred in 1710. After decades of resistance to the British fact, the Acadian deportation--largely to Louisiana when it was still a colony of France--was ordered in 1755.
