Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick

Andre and Paul Rault, Rennes, France

circa 1956

The upper sections are rendered in conventional stained glass, while the lower panels consist of dalle de verre set in lead cames.

This sacrament was long known as the Last Ries or as Extreme Unction. The Fish represents Christ, who chases the Serpent from the soul of the dying person in a last-chance visit by the priest. "OI" is Olia Infirma, Oil of the Sick, used in the sacrament to sooth the body of the dying.
