The Immaculate Conception (detail)

Andre and Paul Rault, Rennes, France

1951-1953

The Raults used dalle de verre to subtly enhance the Mary windows. Here, chunks of dalle embellish her halo. The huge white lilies are symbols of Mary's unquestionable purity.

The Holy Spirit, still known in the 1950s as the Holy Ghost, appears in the form of a haloed dove.
