Western Art Glass, c. 1967

In 2010 we published 1174 photos from some sixty Manitoba buildings.

Isolated yet prosperous, a remarkable cultural blossom at the very centre of the North  American continent, Manitoba has mysteriously produced some of Canada's best artists, including the musician Neil Young,  the sculptor and stained glass artist Leo Mol, the filmmaker Guy Maddin, and the novelist Margaret Lawrence.   Beautiful stained glass has been created in Winnipeg for over 100 years.

For many years Winnipeg was Canada’s third city (after Montreal and Toronto), and   brought splendid glass from international studios such as Morris & Company and  Heaton, Butler & Bayne, of London; Rambusch of New York; and from leading  Canadian houses like Robert McCausland and Napoleon Lyon of Toronto. The  city's noble 20th century architecture was sometimes lavishly embellished, as in   the delightful fairy tale  windows in the Marlborough Hotel. Winnipeg has also been  home to 20th century glass artists including the sculptor Leo Mol,  architect Etienne  Gaboury and glass masters John Allward and Ernest Ashcroft.
